National Supermarket Day: Appreciation and Growth
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of food retail companies in Brazil, which is why this sector is becoming increasingly crucial in Brazilian economic activity. Established by the Brazilian Supermarket Association (ABRAS) in 1968, National Supermarket Day, officially celebrated on 12 November in Brazil, aims to bring together supermarket owners, suppliers and partners for a celebration that reinforces supermarkets’ economic and social impact in the country. This year, with the theme ‘Valuing you, is our greatest commitment!’, companies in the sector used the date to promote customer-orientated actions, such as exclusive offers and events, to celebrate the fundamental role of supermarkets in the Brazilian economy and families’ daily lives.
The importance of this sector transcends the increase in sales, as supermarkets are major generators of jobs and strengthen the local logistics chain. In Minas Gerais alone, food retail accounts for around 7.8 per cent of the state’s GDP, demonstrating the strength of this segment in the local and national economy. In a country where supermarkets employ millions of people, National Supermarket Day has thus emerged as an opportunity to value this contribution and strengthen relations between supermarkets and consumers.
The role of WFM in innovation in the supermarket sector
The various supermarket chains in Brazil are currently experiencing a challenging scenario, with intense competition and a growing need for technological adaptation. In 2023, supermarket sales grew by 1.2% compared to the previous year, according to ABRAS, reflecting the sector’s ongoing efforts to adapt to changes in consumer behaviour and the economy. However, supermarkets also need help with other challenges, such as shift management and talent retention, with turnover rates above the average for different market sectors.
In this scenario, Workforce Management (WFM) solutions have become a competitive advantage for companies in the sector. WFM software technology enables effective management of work schedules, optimising team performance and improving customer service. The use of WFM tools also helps supermarkets to quickly scale their workforce, reducing turnover and increasing productivity, significantly improving financial results and the customer experience.
With the support of advanced forecasting systems, Brazil’s supermarket sector has resources that guarantee more efficient operations and a focus on high-quality service. In a constantly evolving market, the use of these solutions is not just an advantage but a necessity if food retailers are to remain competitive, sustainable, and prepared for the future.
