HR 2.0: Are We Prepared for Change?

We are currently experiencing a powerful revolution in the world of people management. Technology is no longer a futuristic concept, but a strategic ally in how companies across all sectors manage their teams, optimise operations and ensure productivity in increasingly challenging contexts.

This new era, which many are already calling HR 2.0, is profoundly transforming the role of Human Resources leaders, requiring a more analytical, integrated and data-driven approach.

At the heart of this change are Workforce Management (WFM) tools, supported by ‘machine learning’ algorithms, which enable the automation of essential processes, such as schedule management and operational forecasting, all in real-time.

Management processes are constantly evolving, and technology is now more than just a valuable resource; it has become a competitive advantage in the market. Are companies and employees prepared for this change?

Technology combined with people management

More than just a support area, Human Resources now plays a strategic role in organisations, driving productivity, innovation and talent retention. The evolution of employee expectations, growing operational complexity and the need for more flexible work environments require new approaches, supported by technology, and a more human and personalised view of work.

With that being said, José Pedro Fernandes, Vice President of SISQUAL® WFM, recently participated in the Radio Observador podcast dedicated to the theme ‘HR 2.0: How technology works in people management’. Alongside Gonçalo Lobo Xavier, Director-General of the Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies (APED), he reflected on the impact of digital tools on the market, the challenges facing HR departments and the importance of balancing technological innovation with employee well-being and flexibility.

SISQUAL® WFM’s Vice President also highlighted the concept of “Open Shifts”, which allows greater autonomy for employees, responding to real flexibility needs. “Companies have to keep up with behavioural changes in candidates, employee demands and market trends, and technology allows them to do so,” he explained.

WFM as a driver of automation

The ability to improve team planning by anticipating needs, adapting in real-time, and enhancing the employee experience will be critical to the success of companies in the coming years. Therefore, WFM solutions are a clear example of how technology can revolutionise team management. Among the main benefits for Human Resources, the following stand out:

  • Efficient time management: automation of scheduling creation, time off and tasks with a reduction in manual errors.
  • Greater productivity: better allocation of employees based on their skills and availability.
  • Resource optimisation: forecasting of operational needs based on historical data.

According to José Pedro Fernandes, the use of technology does not replace people, but rather enhances their capabilities: “Technology should be at the service of people, not the other way around. Applied to team management, it enables us to maximise the potential of each employee, respecting their time, enhancing their well-being, and strengthening the effectiveness of operations”.

Digital transformation is a competitive advantage

As the labour market becomes more volatile and demanding, investing in technological tools is proving to be a competitive advantage for institutions. Managing people does not have to be a challenge, but rather an opportunity to promote autonomy and create conditions for teams to evolve in parallel with the digital transformation of organisations.
