SISQUAL® WFM launches SMARTASK: the future of global task and schedule management

SISQUAL® WFM, in partnership with the University of Aveiro, is developing the SMARTASK project – Intelligent Systems for the Optimised Allocation of Human Resources by Tasks and Schedules, a strategic R&D (Research and Development) initiative that aims to transform the way organisations plan, manage and optimise work on a global scale.

Part of the COMPETE 2030 programme, SMARTASK arose from the identification of a critical market gap: the lack of solutions capable of automatically generating task-based schedules with global adaptability whilst simultaneously accounting for different legislation, time zones and operational contexts.

The aim is to develop an intelligent, automated and predictive system that enables organisations to optimise the allocation of human resources based on skills, preferences, labour regulations and operational needs in real time.

“We believe that SMARTASK represents a qualitative leap in the way companies approach work planning. It is not just about automating schedules, but about creating intelligent systems that learn, adapt and evolve with organisations,” says Pedro Cabral, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of SISQUAL® WFM.

A new paradigm in task management

One of the project’s most distinctive features is its ability to adapt to different geographical contexts. In this regard, SMARTASK is being designed to operate across multiple countries, whilst respecting the specific legal, cultural and operational requirements of each context.

It will therefore be able to adjust schedules to local laws automatically, integrate time zones and regional public holidays, adapt to different sectors of activity, and respond to diverse organisational contexts, making it particularly relevant for multinational companies or those in the process of internationalisation.

SMARTASK also stands out for integrating advanced technology with a user-centred approach, contributing to a new generation of intelligent work management solutions.

“The key differentiator of this project lies in its ability to combine artificial intelligence with a deep understanding of operational and human realities. We want to create a solution that increases efficiency, but also people’s well-being,” adds Pedro Cabral.

Global adaptability redefines operational management

Co-funded by the European Union, SMARTASK reflects a commitment to technological innovation and business competitiveness, following a rigorous research and development approach based on agile and iterative methodologies, multidisciplinary collaboration between academia and industry, continuous validation with real-world data, and active management of technological and regulatory risks.

According to the COO of SISQUAL® WFM, “the expected impact of SMARTASK is significant, both at an organisational and individual level. For organisations, this translates into greater efficiency in human resources management, reduced operational costs, greater responsiveness to fluctuations in demand and assurance of legal compliance”, he explains.

As for employees, “it will enable more balanced and tailored schedules, better alignment between skills and tasks, greater satisfaction and engagement, and more active participation through continuous feedback mechanisms”, he concludes.

Scheduled for completion in the first half of 2028, this project represents a milestone in the technological evolution of workforce management.
