Future of Work: Nine technology trends that are transforming companies

The world of work is undergoing an unprecedented transformation, driven by digitalisation, automation and the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Gartner, the world’s leading technology consultancy, has identified nine emerging trends that will shape the future of work in the coming years. For CEOs and business leaders, adapting to these changes is key to maintaining competitiveness and guaranteeing a productive and innovative working environment. However, the same study reveals that only 36 per cent of HR leaders feel prepared for the labour changes expected over the next two years.

Find out which trends are revolutionising the labour market and what the best solutions are to meet future challenges!

1. Lack of expert professionals

By 2027, it is predicted that one in six workers will reach retirement age globally. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is taking over tasks previously carried out by humans, which can lead to a loss of specialised knowledge within companies. Therefore, it is essential to develop strategies to preserve this knowledge, even with the increasing use of AI technologies.

2. Human Vs AI interaction

Organisations must restructure themselves to facilitate collaboration between humans and AI technologies. Adopting new methodologies and organisational structures helps to better prepare companies for technological innovation, ensuring that people and machines work in synergy. However, human involvement remains essential for creativity, innovation, and solving complex problems.

3. Integrated Workforce Management (WFM)

Workforce Management (WFM) solutions stand out as an essential tool in the context of automation. Through machine learning, WFM software automates processes such as work schedule planning, time off management, and productivity monitoring, minimising errors and increasing operational efficiency. Companies that implement WFM systems can simplify task execution and improve people management.

4. Use of Chatbots

Only 13% of employees disagree that an algorithm could provide better feedback than their manager. This indicates a significant change in the way workers perceive communication within companies. The rise of chatbots and virtual assistants suggests that employees value immediate and unbiased feedback, which technology can efficiently provide.

5. AI Vs Benefits

The growing popularity of AI has created an environment where many companies claim to use artificial intelligence in their products and services. Organisations must be cautious and ensure that investments in AI are authentic and bring real benefits. In addition, it is essential to guarantee transparency and avoid exaggerations that could jeopardise the trust of customers and employees.

6. Use of ‘Nudgetech’

Around 53% of workers worldwide are satisfied with the relationships they have with colleagues, but 30 per cent avoid interactions in the workplace compared to the pre-pandemic period. Nudgetech is therefore emerging as a solution to improve communication, providing alerts and suggestions for direct action when carrying out tasks. However, it is important to balance the use of these tools so as not to limit employees’ critical thinking.

7. Productivity Vs Emerging Talent

Although AI offers numerous advantages, companies that bet exclusively on artificial intelligence run the risk of jeopardising productivity. Around 20 per cent of employees say that technology has made their job more difficult. It is therefore crucial to invest in AI training for HR leaders in order to facilitate its integration into daily operations.

8. Loneliness in Remote Working

In recent years, the need for digital disconnection has become a risk. Isolation and reduced satisfaction in interactions with colleagues are emerging concerns. Companies must therefore implement concrete actions to promote socialisation between colleagues and managers in order to avoid situations of loneliness that can compromise employees’ performance and mental health.

9. AI regulation

Studies suggest that it will soon be company employees themselves who set the standards for responsible AI. In this context, the European Union recently defined the first European Regulation on Artificial Intelligence (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689), which establishes harmonised rules to ensure that the use of AI is safe, ethical and trustworthy.

The trends identified underline the need for organisations to adapt to rapid changes in the working environment. Integrating Workforce Management solutions is therefore essential to automate tasks, optimise resources and prepare companies for the future of work. By ensuring effective workforce management, organisations will be better placed to face challenges and capitalise on opportunities that arise in the market.
